Luweero Man Hacked to Death After Dispute Over Biscuits, Suspect Surrenders to Police

Residents of Wobulenzi Town Council in Luweero District were on Monday left in shock after Jackson Sserumpanise, a 36-year-old conductor from Kikoma Village, was hacked to death following a quarrel reportedly triggered by a dispute over biscuits.

According to locals, the suspect, Masudi Serugo, accused Sserumpanise of stealing his biscuits and allegedly vowed to “teach him a lesson.”

The confrontation escalated at around 8:30 PM at the Fortbet betting centre, where Serugo allegedly drew a panga and attacked the victim, killing him instantly.

“One moment they were arguing, the next moment Serugo pulled out a panga. People tried to stop him but it was too late,” a resident said.

Immediately after the incident, Serugo fled to Wobulenzi Police Station and surrendered, reportedly fearing mob vengeance as news of the killing spread rapidly. An enraged crowd later attempted to storm the station to lynch him, but officers intervened swiftly to restore order.

“We contained the situation and ensured the suspect remained in custody. We urge residents to let the law take its course,” ASP Sam Twiineamazima, the Savannah Region Police spokesperson, said.

The body of the deceased has been taken to Luweero Hospital for a post-mortem examination, and authorities have appealed for calm as investigations continue.
